We’ve noticed that another online power protection site has sprung up in recent days. One quick view of their site shows that the “About Us” is incomplete. What’s even more concerning is that they charge VAT but make no mention of their VAT registration number! Which begs the question, how can you be sure who you’re buying from and are they reputable?
Well, this question doesn’t concern only those involved with power protection of course, but the first things to check for include the following:
- Does the site employ SSL? If you are asked to enter any information, such as when registering for an account, your details should be encrypted using SSL. Your browser should show a padlock symbol or similar when in an SSL environment.
- Is the site obvious about who they are? Are you dealing with Joe Bloggs who runs the business out of his garage, or are you dealing with a reputable company. For example, UPSMart is the trading website of Power Inspired Ltd. If you go to the About Us section of the web site you note that we make this as clear as day. Power Inspired are a limited liability company, registered at Companies House, which you can check here.
- Any business of substance will be registered for VAT. You can check the VAT number is valid at the Europa Web Site.
Well, these are a few of the obvious things you can check for. I’ve come across web sites that copy exact the layout and feel of the manufacturers web site. You would think you were buying direct from the manufacturer. I’ll have to talk our legal people about this as I’m no legal boffin, but to me this appears misleading at best and even fraudulent. Other sites are clearly created by somebody who has downloaded some web templates, put in some pictures (usually the same one across the range) and is now a bona fide power protection specialist!
